![]() While that was probably Irving’s most (in)famous disclosure on the pod, it was just one of many fascinating thoughts he’s shared. Bill Nye the Science Guy was less amused. Neil deGrasse Tyson sort of laughed it off. Irving’s comments got so much attention that NBA commissioner Adam Silver was asked about it at All-Star Weekend. Then a conversation ensued about who "they" are. "I’m telling you, it’s right in front of our faces. "Because it’s right in front of our faces," Irving replied. How could he possibly know, she wondered, that his research provided the proper answers? That was born from a conversation on the pod, during which Irving said he’d done research on it. You might remember that, back in February, the internet spent some time on Irving’s flat-earth remarks. Kyrie Irving said he’s been "searching for for a while" - something the 25-year-old is all too happy to deep-dive into on Road Trippin’, where he’s a frequent and favorite guest. Mulder and Scully aren’t the only ones convinced the truth is out there. Spend two minutes with him, Irving explained, and "all of a sudden you’re like, ‘I didn’t know Kyrie was like that.’" He said as much on the Road Trippin’ pod, hosted by Richard Jefferson, Channing Frye, and Cavs sideline reporter Allie Clifton. Even if some of us haven’t always recognized it, Irving has. He may not be as mouthy as Draymond or as flashy as Russ, but Kyrie Irving has become one of the best overall entertainment values in the NBA. Reporters sometimes dismiss him as little more than a bland pack interview, while others have wondered if he purposefully messes with the media - like when he walked back the flat-earth pronouncement, said he was well aware it’s scientifically impossible, then turned the whole thing around on the fourth estate, adding that the fact "that could actually be news" was "hilarious."īut how he interacts with press scrums seems less important when measured against the open - and often oddball - alter ego he adopts in more comfortable and revealing settings. The media and Irving have an intermittently prickly relationship. It was not an uncommon sentiment in this industry. When I mentioned to a friend and fellow NBA scribbler that I was in Cleveland to work on a Kyrie Irving piece, he gave me heat and texted something about how he’d rather put his head in a blender. On the contrary, it’s underrated - which isn’t the same as being universally popular. ![]() The point is that Irving’s brand isn’t boring. OK, that last one probably doesn’t count for much, because who doesn’t get into it with LaVar Ball these days? Even so. He might think the earth is flat, among other opinions that some consider strange. He has an ongoing series of commercials for Pepsi - several of which he directed - in which he disguises himself as an old graybeard named Uncle Drew and clowns random dudes on various playgrounds. This year, he has the second-best-selling signature shoe in the NBA, behind only his teammate, LeBron James. ![]() He won a gold medal at the Rio Olympics last year. That kid became an NBA All-Star and a champion and a trash-talker (and a champion trash-talker, or at least a champion scoreboard pointer). Anyone who likes hoops has heard tell of the child prodigy - born in Australia, raised in Jersey - who went off to Duke only to be more of a whisper than a player in Durham because of a toe injury. Sometimes it feels like basketball fanboys/nerds/media don’t talk about Kyrie as a character very often - which is odd when you consider all the time he’s spent being one.

Have fun playing your favorite game such as Go Fish or Memory with quantity cards. Having a variety of configurations strengthens children’s ability to visualize numbers in their minds. Using dots of two colors helps children to see subgroups within a larger quantity such as two blue and two red dots that compose a set of four dots. You can experiment with different dot arrangements - dice pattern, shapes, and lines. Or make your own dot cards with index cards and dot stickers or dot stampers. That is a perfect place to start with your preschooler or kindergartner. Print our quantity cards on sturdy paper and cut them to make a beginner deck of 20 cards see link below. Beyond the laughter, you’ll hear lots of math talk that is natural and playful. Watch this video of a mom and son playing the game Capture together. While the numbers only go through 10, the different representations gets children and adults alike thinking and talking. ![]() The dot patterns have clusters of dots, helping children to see that six can be thought of as 3 and 3, for example. For example, the picture of 4 fingers also shows the thumb tucked away, allowing for children to think and talk about how 4 is one less than 5. Quantity cards depict numbers in relationship to other numbers. Numeral cards present each number separately as a monolithic entity. Most importantly, quantity cards helps children build number relationships. Experience recognizing how amounts that look different can actually be equivalent numbers helps children abstract the “three-ness” of three when playing card games. Though these two cards look quite different, they are the same in one important way-their numerosity. Matching quantities such as dots and fingers develops ideas about equivalence. Most preschoolers will recognize three fingers without counting, “one, two, three.” That is, children will instantly see a small quantity and label it with a number word. Quantity cards require children to look at a picture and say how many they “see.” This attention to numerosity builds children ability to subitize. Quantity cards have pictures of small sets of dots, finger patterns, and 5- and 10- frames showing numbers from 1 to 10. Using quantity cards with pictures when playing card games, rather than numerals, increases children’s attention to numerosity and adds novelty to old favorites like Go Fish or Memory. ![]() Familiar, simple-to-learn card games help young children build their understanding of early math concepts such as cardinality and composing and comparing numbers. ![]() Anita is a central character in this musical. On one occasion she was rescued in tears, from one such event, by a pair of Mexican gardeners: “ The first gentlemen she had met that evening.” Many top people could be unspeakably crude and unpleasant. Harry Cohen, who ran a huge whisky distillery, simply announced upon meeting her at a huge event:- “ You know I would like to fuck you!” These were not one-offs. At that time, Latinas were seen as illiterate sex objects which Rita found deeply hurtful. While she was still a teenager she was raped by her agent, but, realizing that, as a Latina, her options were limited, she was pragmatic enough to keep him on, regardless, as she knew he would get her the work she needed. Louis B Meyer apparently gasped: “A Latin Elizabeth Taylor!” and signed her on the spot without a screen test or an audition.īut things were still not easy. She can sing, she can dance, she can act… and she looks good, what more could you ask for? She obtained her first MGM contract at the age of 18, by dolling herself up to look as much like Elizabeth Taylor as she could. No mean feat, but versatility and resilience are Moreno’s second names. By her early teens, she was also dubbing films into Spanish and, by 16, she was working in nightclubs and had become her family’s main breadwinner. When President Obama awarded her the National Medal of Arts in 2009, he said: - : “In America, no matter what you look like, where you come from or what your last name is, you can make it if you try.”Īnd try she did! Her mother wisely took her to dancing lessons, and still a child of only 11, she was already beginning to dance her way to stardom. Rita Moreno as Valentina in Stephen's Spielberg's West Side Story Moreno had to make do with being cast as a native American, in The Deerslayer (1957) or Tupti, an Asian in The King and I (1956), and usually having to don thick skin-darkening make-up for the roles. This personality shines through and it is painful to think, that despite her overwhelming talent, she had to fight so hard to make it in the prejudiced and sexist Hollywood of the 1930s, 40s and 50s, when young Latin actresses were perceived as only worthy of minor ethnic roles, or worse, mere arm-candy for well-known male actors, their talents and versatility going to waste and ignored. She has a disarming ability to laugh at herself and her situation at all times. ![]() As always, she is very funny and overflowing with vitality. Now, at 90 years old, Moreno is still as lovely as ever, maintaining her lithe figure and amazing energy which truly belies her age. ![]() Already, she was expressing the bright sense of humour that has coloured all her life and has probably been a factor that kept her going, despite the many drawbacks. Is it an omen, she wondered? Being a young child, Moreno was fascinated by the sight of the statue of liberty, thinking it must be the President of the United State holding a giant ice-cream cone. She was not to see her brother again till 2021. They arrived in New York on a freezing February day on a boat called the SS Carabobo, which literally means ‘Stupid Face’. Not long after, her parents divorced, leaving her brother behind with the father, her mother took her to New York hoping to give her a better life. Her mother Rosa María Marcano, was a seamstress and her father, Francisco José ‘Paco’ Alverio, a farmer. Rosa ‘Rita’ Dolores Alverio Marcano was born in the small town of Humacao in Puerto Rico on December 11th,1951. From her humble beginnings, Moreno rose to stand among distinguished artists like Whoopi Goldberg, Audrey Hepburn and Mel Brooks, who are also among the few Egot winners. Having had to face down rampant racism, sexism, and even sexual abuse, she never gave up and struggled up the showbiz ladder to stardom, winning the EGOT, (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards), the ‘ Grand Slam’ of performance awards. It is no coincidence that when we first think of Rita Moreno, we envisage her unforgettable performance as Anita singing and dancing “America” in the original version of W est Side Story (1961) for her life story turned out like a blueprint for the ‘American dream.
